Goretzka´s Schalke return marred by abuse

Leon Goretzka s first Schalke start in 93 days was met with a banner held up by fans that appeared to criticise him for agreeing a move to Bayern Munich.

Germany international Goretzka will join Bundesliga champions Bayern when his contract expires at the end of the season, the impending free transfer having been announced on Friday.

The 22-year-old asked supporters not to turn on him, but his first start since October was met with a large sign in the Veltins Arena that read: Neither money nor trophies are worth more than our club. The one who does not appreciate that can f*** off immediately.

Goretzka sustained a stress fracture to his leg in November, making two appearances as a substitute before suffering a recurrence of the injury early in December.

Prediction: Tottenham vs Newcastle

Best Odds: 6/5

Bookmaker:

Two sides who have their sights set on securing a top-four finish this season, Tottenham will welcome Newcastle to north London on Sunday afternoon.

Tottenham

Starting with the hosts, while Tottenham might have enjoyed a record-breaking purple patch when opening up the 2023/24 campaign, Spurs now have the feel of a squad seeking a crucial boost. Although the Lilywhites might have gained a string of plaudits after they appointed Ange Postecoglou over the summer, they have come crashing back down to earth in a worrying fashion. Suffering another infamous Premier League collapse earlier in the week as they eventually suffered a 2-1 defeat at home against London rivals West Ham, the former Celtic boss has remarkably seen his squad muster j…

Everton sign highly rated youngster Onana from Lille

Everton have completed the signing of midfielder Amadou Onana from Lille.

Onana, who joined Lille from Hamburg in 2021 and made 43 appearances for the Ligue 1 side last season, has signed a five-year contract with the Toffees.

Frank Lampard has been eager to reinforce his midfield ranks, and Onana represents something of a coup for a club that finished 16th in the Premier League last term.

The 20-year-old Belgium international, who only made 15 starts for Lille, looked set to join West Ham, but Everton reportedly matched the Hammers offer, agreeing a fee of £25.3million (€30m) with add-ons potentially taking the deal to £33.7m (€40m).

After sealing his move, Onana told the club s website his desire to learn from Lampard was a key factor in entic…

Bundesliga should copy Premier League window, says Ancelotti

Bayern Munich head coach Carlo Ancelotti wants the Bundesliga to follow the Premier League s lead and bring the end of the transfer window forward to before the start of the season.

Clubs in England s top flight have approved proposals to finish buying players at 17:00 on the Thursday before the big kick-off in 2018-19, a move that has been widely welcomed by managers as an alternative to the end-of-August deadline that falls around three weeks into the campaign.

Only clubs in England s top flight are subject to the alteration and they will still be able to sell any players once the new deadline has passed.

Ancelotti, who led Chelsea to the Premier League title in 2009-10, feels other European countries should consider falling into line.

It’s not even sunk in yet – City youngster Micah Hamilton reflects on debut goal

Micah Hamilton admitted he was struggling to take everything in after his dream goalscoring debut for Manchester City in the Champions League.

The 20-year-old former club ball boy grasped his opportunity as manager Pep Guardiola made wholesale changes for Wednesday’s final group stage dead rubber at Red Star Belgrade.

Hamilton opened the scoring in the first half with a superb strike and also won a late penalty as holders City triumphed 3-2 to wrap up Group G with six wins from six.

Stephen Kenny admits Republic of Ireland ‘needed to win’ against Greece

Beleaguered Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kenny declined to discuss his future after a deeply damaging 2-0 home defeat by Greece finally ended hopes of automatic qualification for Euro 2024.

Ireland were decidedly second-best at the Aviva Stadium and will head for Gibraltar on Monday evening having taken just three points from their first six qualifiers.

However, asked about his tenure, Kenny said: “I’m not going to use this to speak about that.

“Ultimately of course we’re disappointed. We knew it was a group of death, tough games.

Suarez to link up with Uruguay after successful knee surgery

Luiz Suarez will join up with Uruguay to continue his recovery from knee surgery ahead of the Copa America, Barcelona confirmed on Monday.

The LaLiga champions have given striker Suarez the green light to travel to Brazil less than two weeks out from Uruguay s tournament opener against Ecuador in Belo Horizonte.

The 32-year-old had to undergo an arthroscopy after injuring his meniscus last month, ruling him out of Barca s shock Copa del Rey final loss to Valencia.

Uruguay boss Oscar Tabarez included Suarez in his 23-man squad despite the setback and the three-time World Cup veteran appears on track to feature in the continental showcase.

Luis Suarez has finished his individual readjustment phase at FC Barcelona and now joins the Uruguay team to continue …

AC Milan 2 Parma 1: Kessie penalty completes comeback

AC Milan fought back from a goal down to beat Parma 2-1 and move back into Serie A s top four.

A Patrick Cutrone strike and a Franck Kessie penalty, awarded after a VAR review, saw the Rossoneri overturn Roberto Inglese s first-half opener and end a run of two league matches without a victory.

Parma players were far from pleased with the intervention from the video system, as their three-game unbeaten run came to an end at San Siro.

Milan s first-half dominance yielded little more than two close efforts from the lively Suso, who was the biggest threat in attack in the absence of the suspended Gonzalo Higuain.

Riccardo Gagliolo somehow headed wide for the visitors from six yards, although a foul had been awarded against Antonino Barilla, but Milan s set-p…

Napoli enter race for Chong

According to a recent report from Tuttosport, Napoli have entered themselves into the race to try and sign Manchester United youngster Tahith Chong. It’s been well documented that Chong could be on the verge of a move away from Old Trafford, and especially a move to Italy – although, it was Juventus and not Napoli that have been pursuing the signing.

Now that Napoli are in the mix, though, things could get quite interesting. Chong has performed well in a handful of games so far this season for United whenever he’s been given the opportunity to do so, and while he’s still a little bit green, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would almost certainly rather have him playing for United as opposed to against them somewhere down the line.

It’s often difficult to know how…
